...actually two little murmurs. This has been a trying few weeks where I have bitten all of my nails off (a habit I am really trying hard to break). Noah just seemed a little off to me at a month old, not focusing, just blank stares, no real connection. Mother's intuition told me to have him checked. His pediatrician had heard a murmur at his two week appointment but had me feed him to calm him down and felt it was okay after he was calm. When I brought him back to check him out at a month he felt it was louder now and had me take Noah for a chest
xray and
ekg. A chest
xray with a newborn is not a fun experience but we got it done. The
ekg was done incorrectly and had to be redone after a long weekend. The result was that his heart looked enlarged but the good news is the
ekg looked normal but he wanted Noah to see a pediatric cardiologist. They got us in the same day as the referral so I was a bit
panicked. The
cardiologist was wonderful and heard two murmurs as well and scheduled us for an
echo cardiogram. We couldn't get in for that for another week and a half though. They were not all that concerned for urgency since Noah has not displayed any sickness or hard time breathing and he is interested in eating and gaining weight (11 pounds at 5 weeks). The not focusing, just not quite seeming right to mommy is probably related to all the narcotics they had me on in the hospital and once I got home. The cardiologist said it is
actually pretty common and takes a while to get the drugs out of them. So basically my little love had to detox! The cardiologist was not concerned about the enlarged heart since it is really hard to get a good picture of a newborn heart. The
echo cardiogram turned out to be normal too. So, he has two little murmurs that he should outgrow but we will need to monitor them and he will need to see the pediatric cardiologist again at 12 months. Whew, I am so grateful!
